Bellows — ventilator simulator
This simulator needs JavaScript. Enable it and reload to run Bellows.
Bellows is a mechanical ventilation simulator that runs in a web
browser, with nothing to download or install. It pairs a ventilator interface with an adjustable
lung model, so changing a setting produces a simulated response rather than a canned animation.
The simulator draws pressure, flow and volume waveforms in real time
alongside a capnography trace, and supports volume control, pressure control, pressure control
with volume guarantee (PCV-VG) and SIMV with pressure support. Lung compliance, airway resistance
and respiratory drive are all adjustable, which lets the model illustrate auto-PEEP, gas trapping,
breath stacking, flow starvation and other patient–ventilator interaction concepts.
It is designed for respiratory therapy education, critical care and
anesthesia teaching, and simulation-center sessions — by students learning ventilator waveform
interpretation on their own, and by instructors driving a scenario from a separate control panel
while a group watches the screen. An ICU layout and an anesthesia machine layout are both
included, the latter with a circle-circuit gas model covering fresh gas flow and oxygen wash-in.
What you can practice
- Reading ventilator graphics: pressure, flow, volume and capnogram
- Choosing and tuning ventilation modes, PEEP, FiO2 and trigger sensitivity
- Recognizing auto-PEEP, breath stacking and dynamic hyperinflation
- Distinguishing compliance and resistance problems in simulated waveforms
- Spotting patient–ventilator dyssynchrony, such as flow starvation and a patient bucking the ventilator
- Responding to ventilator alarms and working out what caused them
Bellows is for educational use only. Do not use it
for clinical decisions, patient care or real ventilator settings.
